Technology comes into play to revive demand. Digital platforms for the mobility of the future are being built. MaaS for Italy is a first (and significant) response

Urban mobility is undergoing a revolution thanks to the introduction of electronic ticketing systems, an essential component of more efficient and sustainable public transport. These technologies require the definition of clear rules, appropriate governance models and, of course, the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies. The integration of new models such as Mobility as a Service (MaaS), the use of artificial intelligence and the dematerialisation of public transport processes promise significant benefits for users. These innovations not only improve the passenger experience, but also enable transport companies – large, medium and small – to operate more efficiently. But what is the current state of development of public mobility systems and technologies? To provide a first response to this digital transition, Club Italia organised a conference for the Next Mobility Exhibition entitled “Artificial intelligence in public transport to improve service quality and business efficiency. The position of public and private market enterprises.” This event brought together the main companies in the sector and the main associations representing LPT companies, who are ensuring they are ready to provide answers to their users. For this reason, two years ago the Italian government launched an innovative programme called "Mobilità di servizio per l'Italia"(Mobility as a Service for Italy). This ambitious programme was included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), which earmarked significant investment for its implementation: €40 million, plus €16.9 million from the Complementary Fund. The project aims to revolutionise the transport system in Italy, making it more integrated and accessible through the use of digital technologies. The initiative represents an important step towards more sustainable and innovative mobility, aiming to improve the efficiency of public transport and facilitate travel for citizens through the use of advanced digital solutions.
